The future of test and measurement is managed data services

The future of test and measurement is managed data services

Check out the entire presentation from Mike Brendel for the IndustrialFuse event. In under 20 minutes, Mike paints an Industry 4.0 vision for the test and measurement industry. The lessons are applicable to a wide variety of durable industrial equipment companies as they develop their next generation of products, both hardware and associated data services. Here are some takeaways:

Make time for the “Important but not urgent” - Cloud connectivity and web-based features are rarely the primary function of a piece of equipment. With test and measurement equipment there is usually a primary task that needs to be done to keep production lines moving. Data management is secondary but it may be a primary driver of future profits if given strategic consideration.

Data management is the future - Industrial customers want outcomes not just shiny boxes. The future of industry is managed data solutions and the time to plan for it is now. The boxes you sell in the future may depend more on the shiny cloud that comes with it.

Where to start? - Look at incorporating two key technologies

  1. Web-based UI technologies

  2. Event Streaming Technology, e.g., Redis, Kafka
