Upcoming Event October 2: DeviceConnect's Ultrasound of the Future
Life Science Washington and Product Creation Studio present: DeviceConnect Series
Network and learn from innovators like you.
EVENT DESCRIPTION: ULTRASOUND OF THE FUTURE
The Pacific Northwest has long been known as hotbed for ultrasound technology. Companies like Philips, Fujifilm Sonosite, Siemens Healthineers and Verathon have pushed the boundaries of ultrasound imaging while companies like Liposonix, Ekos, and Kona have leveraged the therapeutic power of ultrasound. Meanwhile ultrasound innovation continues among academic labs and emerging companies. As the need to efficiently diagnose and treat patients increases, we are curious about the opportunities and challenges for the ultrasound industry. Join us for this engaging DeviceConnect discussion where we will chat with industry stakeholders about what the new frontier of ultrasound may have in store.

PANELISTS:
Caitlin Cameron
Chair and CEO, OtoNexus Medical Technologies, Inc.
Caitlin Cameron is a highly accomplished senior executive with 30 years’ cross-industry expertise in the Life Sciences, Biotech, Technology, and IT industries and is a specialist in building successful start-up companies.
Ms. Cameron is Chair of the Board and CEO of OtoNexus Medical Technologies, which is commercializing an ultrasound medical device to instantly and accurately diagnose middle ear infections, or Otitis Media, in children and adults. Otitis Media is the #1 indication for antibiotic prescriptions in children and the #1 cause for surgery in children, yet clinical studies consistently show error rates in diagnosis averaging 50%, particularly in the key differentiation between viral and bacterial infections and the determination of whether an antibiotic is appropriate. OtoNexus’ handheld device is simple and easy to use, highly accurate, and inexpensive, providing, for the first time, definitive, objective diagnostic data, leading to increased accuracy, earlier and better treatment, reduced antibiotic use, and reduced healthcare costs.
Ms. Cameron is also the Board Chair of Life Science Washington, one of the largest and strongest Life Science trade associations in the nation, whose mission is to support and grow Washington Life Sciences through advocacy, collaboration and investment. She additionally sits on several Boards and Advisory Boards. An active Angel investor, she has provided mentorship and advice to many entrepreneurs, and led or participated in dozens of due diligence reviews. She frequently gives panels and presentations, and provides education in the areas of Life Sciences and building successful start-ups.
Diku Mandavia, MD
Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer at SonoSite
Diku Mandavia, MD, FACEP, FRCPC, joined SonoSite as a medical advisor in 2007 and currently serves as Chief Medical Officer for both FUJIFILM SonoSite and FUJIFILM Medical USA. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Southern California and was an Attending Staff Physician at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles from 1998-2010. Dr. Mandavia is a founding member and past-chair of the ACEP Ultrasound Section and co-author of the ACEP Ultrasound Guidelines. He has taught thousands of physicians worldwide, lectured at over 200 medical conferences and has been awarded ACEP's Outstanding Speaker of the Year. Dr. Mandavia has also contributed to over 90 publications and is co-director of the national Resuscitation Conference. He received his medical degree from Memorial University in Canada, completed his residency at Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center and is a graduate of the Stanford Executive Program.
Pierre D. Mourad, PhD
Professor of Neurological Surgery, Engineering and Mathematics at University of Washington, Research Affiliate, Center on Human Development and Disability at University of Washington
Dr. Pierre Mourad holds a Professorship at the University of Washington, affiliated with departments whose interests are defined by brain disorders (Neurosurgery [primary appointment]) or have an interest in developing medical technology (Engineering and Mathematics [primary appointment]; Bioengineering [adjunct appointment]; Applied Physics Laboratory [adjunct appointment]). His research and pedagogy target translational research and commercialization, in collaboration with medical doctors and engineers. Specifically, Dr. Mourad brings physics – generally ultrasound – to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases or disorders of the brain. Of prime importance, he works to address clinically relevant problems in a manner that has the best chance to improve clinical outcomes as quickly as possible. Dr. Mourad's research moves expeditiously from in vitro studies through commercialization steps that include pre-clinical trials of devices associated with his work. He also creates companies based upon his technology – four companies to date, one still active, another two under consideration. In addition, he teaches 'Entrepreneurship for Engineers', whose target is inculcation within the engineering undergraduates the attitude, mindset as well as skills and knowledge germane to (medical) device development. Moreover, Dr. Mourad teaches classes on diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound – how it works, what it does, and why – to undergraduates, graduates, residents, practicing clinicians, with examples chosen from the increasingly rich literature of ultrasound applied to the brain. Finally, Dr. Mourad has added to his research repertoire other means of 'affecting' brain function for good, a broad way of highlighting work on AR and VR for rehabilitation after stroke.
Kendall R. Waters, PhD
Senior Manager, Transducer Engineering and Innovation, Siemens Healthineers
Kendall Waters is a Senior Manager of Transducer Engineering and Innovation at Siemens Healthineers. Much of his industry career has focused on advanced technology development for medical ultrasound imaging devices. He has led and contributed to teams that commercialized the first 60 MHz intracoronary ultrasound imaging system and catheter, the first deep learning algorithm for automated bladder volume measurements, and the first machine learning algorithm for automated coronary plaque classification. Kendall is an inventor on 40 issued patents and 10 pending patents related to medical imaging and sensing devices. He holds a PhD in Physics from Washington University in St. Louis.
